République

A kid with a board, a sidewalk with cracks that could be drawn from memory. A devotion so deep it becomes an identity, then blossoms into a way of moving through the world, a fact about who you are.

Skateboarders gathered around the Monument à la République in Paris.
A skateboarder jumping above a Paris street.
Skateboarders crossing a Paris boulevard near République.
A skater in a cream cardigan in the afternoon light.
A skater walking through a Paris square in a white shirt.
A skater moving across the pavers in black and white.
Two skaters sitting beside a Paris street.

It's one thing to carry that alone. It's another to see it reflected back by strangers who carry the same devotion, understood without being told. They gather in a square once named for the fountain at its center, where a monument to the Republic now stands.

A smiling skater in front of the République metro entrance.
A skater standing against a worn stone wall.
A skater airborne above a city street.

Morning finds the square quiet, traffic passing in a low, constant murmur, pigeons scattering off the pavers. By afternoon the light turns golden. The purists drift in. The tourists follow, writing their own version of the same story.

Skateboards and feet gathered on the stone pavers of République.
Friends moving together through the afternoon crowd.
A skater in a checked shirt seated beside his board.
A skater moving down a Paris street at sunset.
Three friends with skateboards beside a city wall.
